Frederic Place

Home for the Aged, Johannesburg

Since 1978 · Coronationville, Johannesburg

A haven of dignity for the aged and destitute.

Frederic Place is one of the few homes in Johannesburg still open to older people who have nowhere else to turn — offering residential and frail care to those who cannot pay for it themselves, alongside those who can, with the same welcome and the same respect.

Our Story

Founded in charity. Still true to it.

Frederic Place was founded in 1978 as a project of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, to meet the needs of elderly and destitute people in the neighbourhood. In 2012, we registered as an independent non-profit organisation with Public Benefit status — but the Vincentian spirit that started this home, seeing Christ in the poor and treating them accordingly, remains at its centre.

We are registered as a residential facility under the Older Persons Act of 2006. As South Africa’s population ages, homes like ours — open to those who cannot pay — are becoming harder to find. We intend to remain one of them.

Most of our residents could never afford private care and are heavily subsidised by public donations and support from SSVdP. A few residents pay their own way. Every one of them is treated with the same compassion — and the same dignity.

Care We Provide

Two levels of care, one standard of respect

Residential Care

For older persons who can no longer live safely on their own but do not need daily nursing. Residents have their own room, regular meals, and a community around them — and support from our staff for daily living.

Frail Care

For the 20 residents who need a higher level of nursing and personal care each day. Our frail care wing provides close supervision, assistance with daily needs, and dignity for those in the most vulnerable stage of life.

Frederic Place runs on generosity

Donate

Most of our residents rely on donations to cover the cost of their care. Every contribution goes directly to food, nursing, and daily needs.
